3 Secrets For A Happier Life!

Who doesn't love a good secret? Thankfully, this is a secret that you can share! So maybe it's not totally a secret but I've got some juicy details in here! When it comes to life, we will experience hard times. I just got off the phone with two friends who are dealing with situations so heartbreaking that I was fighting tears while on the phone with them. In the midst of all trials and in the midst of all triumphs, we must be sure to follow these three rules in order to continue to receive the best in life and to also shine the light of Christ to those we come in contact with!

1. Be kind.

As a child, it wasn't uncommon to hear parents stress the importance of being kind.
"Don't hit your brother!" "Say 'excuse me'!" There were always plenty of reinforcements to encourage you to be kind. We live in a society where people feel so entitled. If you feel like hitting someone, you do it. If said person gets upset about it, they're in the wrong. Why? Because you felt like doing something so as a result, you should be able to. There's no more excuse me. We cut people off. We cut people off on the road and in conversation. We interrupt and get upset when they remind us that they were in the middle of talking. Why? Because we feel entitled. If I want something, I should be able to get it when I want it without waiting or being excused. A person who wants friends must show themselves friendly. If you are not kind, friendly, jovial, or pleasant, it's going to be very hard for people to actually enjoy being around you. They may be around you to appease you or make sure you don't go off on them in anger but the reality is that our best selves are shown in environments where we feel safe. An environment where someone is unkind is an environment of tension. If you don't want people feeling like they're walking on eggshells around you, learn to become genuinely kind. No situation, good or bad, is an excuse to be unkind.

2. Be open.

There is a sense of control that we all like to have in situations. Even when it comes to growing in our Christian walk, we're constantly hearing about how there is a need to SURRENDER our will over to God's and give Him full control. Most (if not all) Christians don't like the sound of that. However, being open to the concept of surrender WILL make your life better because of who you're surrendering it to. Be open to what God has to offer you because He wants to restore you and heal you. Be open to the experiences and people God will bring into your path. They will enhance your life, whether it be through a lesson learned or a friendship gained. Don't close yourself off based on fear of hurt, failure or insecurity. Give that to God because if the enemy can keep you in a place where you're closed off, you won't grow. Let the light in and be open!

3. Be grateful.

My senior pastor did a sermon a few years ago around Thanksgiving time. I always reference it because it really did change the trajectory of my life. I naturally look at life from a skeptical/negative view. I anticipate what could go wrong. I worry and get afraid. It's pretty crippling. However, after listening to her sermon on gratitude, I was CHANGED. She encouraged the congregation to get into the habit of being grateful for each breath and opportunity to get things right with God. We also needed to "in all things, give thanks". So when negative things happen to you (which they will), it's your job to put on the grateful lens and see the good that can come out of the situation. If you do that with each moment, you will develop a lifestyle of gratitude. Even if you have to focus on the fact that you are still breathing or that you're in your right mind, those are blessings that shouldn't be taken for granted.  Thanksgiving and gratitude are disciplines that must be developed. They're not easy but they're totally worth it!

I hope I've encouraged you to accept these three points into your life.
May God continue to bless you as you seek Him with your whole heart!

Becoming a Morning Person Pt. 2

I've been working on waking up to the tune of 5am.
My goal is to consistently wake up at 4 am without the help of an alarm.
I want my body to naturally be ready to wake up at 4 am. So this involves a few things:

1. I need to go to bed earlier.
2. Laying in bed for a few more minutes is a major no-no.

So my experience has been a little tragic recently because even though I am successfully getting up, I am exhausted. I've been getting into bed by 11 pm which is not toooo bad but I will stay up answering emails, pinning on Pinterest and watching YouTube videos later than 11pm. Shame on me, I know.

I'll wake up at 5am but within a few hours of being at work, my eyes are rolling around in the back of my head and I literally STRUGGLE to keep my eyelids open. It's crazy. I had this issue a couple years ago and I purchased a couple bottles of 5 hour energy to drink as needed. It helped but I don't want to do that this go-round.

Suggested Solution:
Take those things that keep you up late unneccesarily (tv, emails, social media, shopping, etc.) to a designated time slot in the early morning.

I love Pinterest and if I know I have a designated time slot for it in the morning, it will encourage me to go to bed and anticipate waking up to get my creative caffeine for the day. When it's time to get out of bed, GET OUT OF BED. Designate a spot in your house where you can get to work and make a bee line for it. If you don't have a spouse or child still in the bed when you get up, make the bed. When the bed is made, it'll be less tempting to get in it.

Just remember that the work you put in today may not pay off immediately tomorrow but you're investing in yourself. To see a return on investment, you may have to put in some work. It's worth it though. Take it all one day at a time. Before you know it, 4 am will be your best friend!

You can do it! Stay tuned for more updates & lessons I learn in becoming an early riser!
Thanks for reading!
God bless you!

The Golden Rule & Our Ability to Love

"Treat others how you would want to be treated"- What a perfect mantra to live by!

There is a reason why that particular rule is considered golden.  It's so deeply rooted in love. We all have gifts, talents and abilities. By God's grace, we all have the ability to love.

No matter how sadistic a person may seem, at the core, we ALL want to be loved. We don't want to be merely tolerated. We want love, appreciation and kindness shown to us. It's interesting because we may WANT love but we don't necessarily go out of our way to give love. The Bible notes in Acts 20:35 that it is more blessed to give than to receive but does that truly transfer over when it comes to loving the people in your life?

It can be easy to love people on the good days or when they've done something great for you. The challenge comes in when a person is inconsiderate, rude or downright hateful. Will you still love?  When we've experienced an offense/been offended,  human nature usually kicks in and says that we can bypass loving the offender. Additionally, we get a golden pass to return evil for evil.

There are people who I know take pleasure in knowing that I've faced some not-so-great days. There is something about misery loving company.  There are people (not just one) that are walking around that I don't particularly care for. There are people that I would be totally okay if I never ever saw them again.  It's not that I wish them harm but because of the brokenness/disfunction in the relationship, I'd be good to "God bless you" and bid them adieu. There are people who I know are mean and take pride in being mean.  Why should I love them? If they dish it out, they should be able to take it, right?

I'm reading Steps to Christ by Ellen G. White with my church. One of my pastors creates these incredible study guides to go along with the chapters we're reading. I'm really enjoying it. One of the things I was reminded of in the Chapter 1 was that when Jesus was here on Earth, every word He spoke, even if it was a rebuke, OOZED (and continues to ooze) love. There were two thought-provoking testaments to the love Christ showed that I highlighted in my book.

Thought #1:
"Love, mercy, and compassion were revealed in every act of His life; His heart went out in tender sympathy to the children of men. He took man's nature, that He might reach man's wants. The poorest and humblest were not afraid to approach Him. Even little children were attracted to Him. They loved to climb upon His knees and gaze into the pensive face, benignant with love. - (SC 11.2)

It just seems natural to be afraid to approach someone who everyone sees as important. I'd be nervous to approach President Obama or any other former president for that matter. There are many famous and a few not-so-famous people that I'd be afraid to approach. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be a little tense about running into Suge Knight in the grocery store. Mind you, it's not necessarily the air that the person projects. Sometimes, it's our own mental stronghold that keeps us from approaching others. At the same time, random kids aren't running and jumping in my lap! Lol! The only way to be that approachable is to learn to not only give love like Christ did but make a commitment to become like God because essentially, God is love.

Thought #2:

Jesus did not suppress one word of truth, but He uttered it always in love. He exercised the greatest tact and thoughtful, kind attention in His intercourse with the people. He was never rude, never needlessly spoke a severe word, never gave a needless pain to a sensitive soul. He did not censure human weakness. He spoke the truth, but always in love.

We are supposed to follow that example. When I get annoyed with something, I'll often feel like I have the right to be rude. Christ was NEVER rude. In my experience, it seems like in order to get things done with certain people, you HAVE to be rude or they'll trample all over you and I don't want to be anyone's doormat. However, if I want to be like Christ, Christ was NEVER rude and I have to remember that.

Wait...what?
Never rude?!?!?!?!?!

Nope! He was NEVER rude! He never spoke a severe word. A severe word could be something as "harmless" as cracking a joke at someone's expense behind their back. If it's something you couldn't say to their face because you know it's hurtful, don't say it.

People who are mean, rude, hateful, spiteful need the most love. Our definition of love is found in 1st Corinthians 13: 4-7. I think it's always good to CRITICALLY go through these verses and accurately apply them to each person in your life especially the people who make you cringe. I'm not saying you'll be best friends with everyone. As a matter of fact, you won't. Look at Christ. He was hated by many yet He still loved and He still forgave. It all goes back to treating others how you would want them to treat you. After all, the golden rule, in it's finest hour, reveals love.

Continue to pursue Christ and let Him show you how to love.

God bless you!

Becoming A Morning Person Pt. 1

"Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."

My mother used to recite this popular quote by Benjamin Franklin when my sisters and I were little. We used to like staying up late to watch television and she would always use this saying to remind us that staying up late was never in our best interest.

Speaking of my mother, one of the most beautiful traits my mother possessed was the ability to gently lead by example. My mom was born in Grenada, W.I. and naturally loved the heat. The laundry room was the warmest place in the entire house and so she loved going in there to study. She even had her own special couch in the room so she could be comfortable. Mom would do her morning devotion and then she would study/do homework (she was a teacher and was also in a Master's program at GW). She would do this routine every morning at 5 am. As a result, she was able to be successful in juggling her class load, achieving straight As all while managing a home, career, children and a husband. Even though she's not here anymore, my respect and admiration for her continues to grow daily.

In Exodus, we read about Moses and his challenging journey with the Children of Israel through the wilderness. At one point, Moses communed with God and received the Ten Commandments (Exodus 31:18). However, when Moses came down from Mt. Sinai, he found the Children of Israel worshipping a golden calf. He was so furious that he threw the two Ten Commandment-inscribed tablets on the ground, breaking them to pieces. So since the Ten Commandments are pretty important and they needed them, God felt it was important to give Moses another copy. God is so particular when it comes to His instructions so it's important to listen when He speaks. So, In Exodus 34, God gives instruction to Moses on what to do next so that He can get the tablets. Verse 2 opens up with God telling Moses to, "be ready in the morning".

Now, I know that God can meet with us anytime and anywhere. However, for some reason, I believe there is something special about getting into the habit of early rising. Many people who have achieved levels of success that they never dreamed possible have noted that early rising helped them get there. Upon further reading in Exodus 34, God instructs Moses to come to Mt. Sinai early and alone. There's something significant about communing with God without any people to distract you. Early mornings are the time when the world is the most quiet. A lot of people are still asleep and the business of the day hasn't begun quite yet. Even the Proverbs 31 woman gets up in verse 15, "while it is still dark." So she's up before the sun! Some of my most intimate moments with Christ have happened when I've risen early in the morning. Over the next few weeks, I'm going to share some great benefits to early rising and how to become an early riser. So, if you're like me and want to see some major growth in your life this year, stay tuned!

God bless you!

What Are You Thirsty For?

Don't you hate it when you have a craving for something in particular and nothing else can fill it? Sometimes I have a specific craving for salty meals like salmon, olives, aged cheese and heavily seasoned asparagus. It's the strangest combination. When I know I want that meal, a regular salad or sandwich just won't do. To take it a step further; Have you ever had a craving for something you knew you didn't have and you tried to replace it with something that was available in the fridge? You may try to eat more of that other substitute, but in the end, you're still not satisfied. For example, you may want Deer Park water but Aquafina is the only one available. It's just not the same!

In the innermost part of our souls, we know, innately, that we need more than what we see in front of us. We are all searching for some entity to quench that thirst/longing that we all have to be heard, understood and loved unconditionally. Jesus says in John 4:14 that "whoever drinks of the water that I shall give will never thirst again."

A couple months ago, I heard an elder bring up different ways that we use to get our thirst quenched. We try to quench our thirst by using some of these tools:

1. Power - Having power is not a bad thing. Being in a leadership position is an awesome responsibility that, when used wisely, can foster positive growth and impact for the greater good. However, when a person seeks power only to control and manipulate others, they are coming from a place of deep hurt. There is a thirst to fix the hurt that others committed against them by propelling the hurt on others. With Christ as the center, He can heal past hurts and quench the longing so that power doesn't become an abusive tool for those in its' path.

2. Praise- It's such an incredibly beautiful sight to see when people support and encourage one another. We are relational beings and need to be uplifted and encouraged by one another. Even though it is beautiful, it shouldn't be all you rely on. If you rely on the admiration and praise of others, you'll be sorely disappointed when they criticize you. Don't place your value in how many friends you have, how many people like you, your social media stats or the accolades you receive. People's opinion may change about you so you need to know that Christ is sufficient for all your questions about your worth.

3. Possessions- Isaiah 55:2 says "why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy?" There is always a new smartphone, tablet or gadget that is supposed to make life a teeny bit easier. There is usually a pretty hefty price tag attached to those supposed "lifesavers". Or there is another sale at the mall with an outfit that you have to buy because the other 70 outfits in your closet don't quite encompass your style the way that this one does (yeah right).  The text is not saying don't enjoy nice things but at the same time, you have to understand that those things won't satisfy you. You must seek the kingdom of God. God is the only one who can satisfy.

4. Pleasure - When used in the right context, pleasure is a necessary part of our everyday living. When it's abused, the habits can have damaging effects. Sex within the context of marriage is a beautiful and necessary part of life. Eating is a necessary part of life. Enjoying leisure time with friends is a necessary part of life. However, when used outside of marriage, premarital sex can result in STDs, emotional damage and unwanted pregnancy. Eating whenever it feels pleasurable can lead to overrating and the health issues that come along with being overweight. Leisurely spending time with friends but neglecting the study of the Word of God, work or personal responsibilities can lead to an eventual overload of work that has only been fostered by procrastination and escapism. 1st John 2:15 commands us to not love the world. "Everything in the world -the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does -comes not from the Father but from the world."

At the root of all we search for, there is a deep crying out for Christ. Matthew 5:6 reminds us that you can be filled with Christ. Let Him take full control.

So... what are YOU thirsty for?

A Good Name.

If you are reading this on a computer, tablet, or mobile device, you have access to the Internet. If you have access to the Internet, you automatically have access to a Bible. There are so many websites that share the Word of God in numerous translations. Because we get so used to having the Bible at our fingertips, it can be easy to take its' content for granted.  As believers, we must be committed to reading the Word on a daily basis. It's the only way we'll be able to successfully handle the challenges and joys that Christ allows to come into our lives.

Proverbs 22:1 says that, "a good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold." One of the challenges I fight is the feeling that a good name really doesn't mean much anymore. In my opinion, a good name is earned. A good name doesn't happen overnight. A good name doesn't necessarily mean perfect. However, a good name works to bear the fruit of the spirit and grow in Christ daily. When I read Proverbs 22:1, the first question I instinctively ask God is, "Are you sure?" The reason I ask that is because right now in 2014, our culture declares that it is better to have silver, gold and riches than a good name. It doesn't matter who you step on to get to the top, just as long as you get there. What's at the top? A penthouse suite filled with silver, gold and riches. Let's face it. Money is oftentimes the bottom line.
The fact that money is the bottom line is probably why it is so refreshing for me to see people who are motivated by purpose and passion to get up in the morning and do what they do. For some, it's not about the money but the higher calling and responsibility God placed on their lives. For those people, life is sweeter and greater because of the emotional and spiritual investments they are able to make in others.

I recently heard a CEO answer a question about how it felt to reach success in her career and achieve financial freedom. It was interesting because the moderator seemingly expected a fairy tale answer of financial freedom being "more than she'd ever dreamed of." Instead, the CEO shared that financial freedom, the car and the beautiful home only made her more miserable. She believed that obtaining those special things would make her feel like she had "arrived" and they would finally fulfill her. However, money just buys stuff. Money can't fulfill you. The way she was able to get out of that place of discontentment was to connect with God and realize how to focus on joy and her purpose. Her purpose helped to bring a sense of contentment because she knew it was God-given and would fulfill her in ways that money could never do.

If you're reading this blog and you're not financially free, don't wait until you get there to be happy and content in Christ. Don't chase after those things. Work hard and pursue Christ. As a result, you will obtain a good name. A good name magnifies the beautiful attributes of a Christ who loves us so deeply. You can encourage others to live a life that honors Him simply by your actions. Money is a great tool but it's not something to chase. It can't fulfill you and it certainly won't impress God. Pursue a good name. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and He will add all those others things!

God bless you!
Happy New Year!

Persecution is a Blessing .

We'd be naive to believe that people don't speak negatively about us. If you're doing something positive and trying to serve God, there will be nay-sayers and negativity. The enemy will use ANYONE to try and get you off of your game.  It's all a matter of learning how to handle the criticism in such a way that it doesn't rock you to your core. Everyone will face criticism especially when on a path that's positive. If you haven't faced criticism, you're probably doing something wrong. That's really uncomfortable to think about because we all want to be liked and adored. However, that won't be the case. People will literally find reasons to dislike you.

I am so encouraged from the text for today. I really like the Message translation because it's so conversational.

"Not only that -- count yourselves blessed every time people put you down or throw you out or speak lies about you to discredit me. What it means is that the truth is too close for comfort and they are uncomfortable. You can be glad when that happens-- give a cheer, even!--for though they don't like it, I do! And all heaven applauds. And know that you are in good company. My prophets and witnesses have always gotten into this kind of trouble." Matthew 5:11,12.

Here are two reminders I'd like to share to encourage you in the Lord!

1. When you are earnestly seeking to do God's will and people talk about you, you are blessed! -
That's weird, right? When I think of blessings, I think of the fruit of the spirit. I also think of tangible blessings like good family & friends. I don't like to think about slander & persecution as blessings but Jesus Christ says to be happy and cheer when these things happen because you are in good company. Anyone that was considered a warrior for Christ experienced this blessing. Consider it an honor that God has confidence that you can rise to the occasion and wear the blessing of persecution well.

2. When you are living a life that pleases God, your mere presence is a rebuke to people who are in the wrong. You don't even have to say anything. The light of God that's in you says it all. So when you come around people and they get uncomfortable and feel judged, it could be a result of your enemies knowing the difference between right and wrong but still choosing to live in the flesh. Be careful not to shrink as a result of their attack. You still need to shine for Christ because there are people are in desperate need of a Savior and will not reject Him. Your testimony is needed. Make a commitment to yourself to live boldly for Christ in spite of the discomfort that may come with persecution.

I hope this encourages you to continue in your walk with Christ. I'm learning these lessons as I write them so we're in this together. May God bless you as we continue to unashamedly pursue Him!

God bless you!

What's Your Plan?

Ever since Nelson Mandela's passing last week, I've been contemplating how I can be a better person. When a great man like Mandela passes, it's hard not to do some self-reflection and consider how to be great like he was. In church this past Sabbath, my pastor reminded us of what Mandela had to endure as a prison inmate for 27 years. My pastor shared that Mandela had to eat soup that stank. The thought of eating stinky soup for 27 years was enough to make me want to act right.  I can't imagine going through 27 years of prison without coming out a teensy bit bitter but Nelson Mandela harbored no hatred or bitterness.  I'm inspired and charged to be better as a result of his life. I think that with everything, you must have a plan. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. I've been alive for 27 years and in that time, I've learned a little bit about trial and error. I've figured out what I need to do in order to be better with the knowledge and wisdom I have right now. So I've created a plan. I've entitled it the Dani Plan. I've broken it down into breakable bits of realistic goals. I've already begun to get the ball in motion and I'm so excited. To encourage you to be proactive about your goals and dreams, I'd like to share a little bit of what's on my Dani Plan!

The Dani Plan
1. Spirituality
a. Express gratitude daily (early morning).
- Habit to implement: Write in gratitude journal first thing in the morning instead of when you remember. Showing gratitude is not only showing appreciation in a relationship but it's also polite. Have some manners on a regular basis with God. Always say thank you!

b. Committed Service
- Habit to implement: Do a random act of kindness/service for someone every week. Service is the rent you pay for living. The act can be a card via snail mail, a bouquet of flowers, create some artwork, a dish, a thoughtful visit or phone call, etc.

2. Physical Appearance
a. Skin improvements
- Habit to implement: Lemon juice mix for skin/ 5 minutes a night.

b. Hair
- Habit to implement: Incorporate ACV/Rosemary rinses back into regimen every 2 weeks.

3. Hobbies
a. Crocheting/Looming
-Habit to implement: Work on & complete one new piece every two weeks. You could even give some away as gifts: infinity scarf, afghan, blanket, beanies,

b. DIY projects
-Habit to implement: Take time out to do a DIY project you've always wanted to try but never took the time to do. See DIY list docx.

There are more parts to the my personal plan. However, I'm taking everything in sizable portions so that it doesn't feel daunting.

Apparently it takes 21 days to make a habit stick. So here we go!
Let me know how you've felt charged to be better as a result of anything that happened this year and more importantly, how are you going about the change?

Where Does Happiness Come From?

After listening to a recent sermon from Pastor Steven Furtick, I've been determined to make sure that the words that shape the season I'm in are words of positivity and encouragement.

It's easy to get discouraged and STAY discouraged when we can't imagine a way out of difficult challenges we face in life. I just want to encourage you to keep pushing and don't give up. Here's what I've found to be important in creating an atmosphere of gratitude and ultimately, happiness:

Count YOUR blessings and not your neighbor's.

I believe that contentment is a discipline that must be developed. It's very easy to get into the habit of counting the blessings of family, friends, enemies, celebrities and total strangers (social media) and comparing what you have.  Our ultimate purpose and reason we were created is to glorify the Father. You have everything you need at this moment to fulfill your ultimate purpose in Christ. If you ever felt like you were lacking in some area, allow God to supply it. If He hasn't supplied it, He obviously believes you can work at your greatest capacity without it. By getting caught up in what you DON'T have, you miss out on the beautiful blessings of what you DO possess and what God is doing in your life. Be thankful for the grace God gives anew every morning and be determined to see the positive in every situation.

For example, speaking a single woman, I've found that it's easy to get into the mindset that "one elusive day" if I get married, THEN I'll be happy. This is a way that many singles decide to put their happiness on hold. It's common to hear of people who are happily married which is a beautiful thing. Have you ever noticed that there isn't much talk about  the "happily single" person? A lot of times, single people are considered incomplete, late bloomers, or behind. That mindset has become a cultural norm which doesn't allow us to unashamedly follow what Christ would have us to do in every aspect of our lives. It's possible to be happily single. It's also possible to be lonely and unhappily married. I wouldn't wish the latter on anyone but I really wish more people were vocal about the fact that being happy doesn't happen as soon as you get the dream job, spouse, house, life, etc. If you aren't happy before obtaining those things, when you receive it, it may boost your happiness temporarily. Unfortunately, in the long run, those blessings (that can often become idols) only amplify the unhappiness.

Make a decision to fall in love with Christ and the portion of His grace, mercy, and love that He's bestowed in this season of your life. Love Him and watch your life overflow with more than happiness but an unspeakable joy.

God bless you!

No Spoon Feeding

I really love to learn more about God in His Word. The Bible is undoubtedly the best book ever! It was written by 40 different authors but is still so cohesive. What a remarkable way to display the consistency of the Lord! Stories of warriors like David and dreamers like Joseph are pretty straightforward and simple to understand. There are, admittedly, a few books that can seem pretty intimidating to read. However, I’d like to encourage you to become an avid reader of the Word of God. There are so many spiritual treasures to discover that can greatly enhance the intimacy of your walk and understanding of Christ. It's very easy to get into the habit of reading devotionals, listening to sermons and getting the Word second-hand so I understand how that can happen. Don't get lazy though. Dust off the Bible on dresser and open it up! As I continue to study the Bible, I’ve picked up a few habits for making studying a little more fun and memorable. I will share a few of mine.

1.     The S.O.A.P. Method- I’m not sure where the S.O.A.P method originated. I know it’s a popular bible study method. I first learned about it when I was part of a women’s small group. S.O.A.P. is an acronym, which stands from Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer.  At the beginning of the study, we would pick one chapter and take turns reading it aloud. We would then take time out to individually observe the verse that stood out the most to us. We would then figure out a way to apply the lesson of the verse or chapter to our lives. Then we would end with prayer. It’s a pretty awesome way to study and apply the Word of God to your life in a very practical way.
2.     Color Coding- I write in a gratitude journal with vibrant colored markers. I also use those same markers to highlight the verses that stand out to me along the way while I’m reading. I also keep an ink pen handy to write notes on the pages. Unfortunately, the markers do bleed through the pages a little bit but they don’t make a big mess.
3.     Index Cards- My sister put me on to this trick of using index cards and sticking them in the Bible at the place where something stood out to her. She’ll also write the verse on the card and any notes she may have. Even though she said that her cards don’t fall out of her Bible, I prefer to keep them in one place outside of my Bible. I guess I’m a teensy bit OCD. You can punch a hole in the cards and keep them on a ring so they’re easily portable but also in one place together.
4.     Early to Rise- As a child, I always remember hearing the quote; “Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise!”  I find that when I wake up really early in the morning to study my Word, my mind is a lot clearer and my heart is more receptive to what God is saying. I also feel like there is such a beautiful intimacy because it feels like God and I are the only two awake and we get to spend private time together.
5.     Where do I stand in the text? -  One of my pastors did an exercise where we read the parable of the Good Samaritan. Afterward, we put ourselves in the shoes of one of the characters in the story and imagined how it must have felt to be in their shoes. You’d be surprised how relatable Bible stories can be once you put yourself in the text. If you were Eve, you’d like to think you’d do things differently than she did, but truthfully knowing yourself, would you have been any different? This exercise gives you those types of questions to stretch your studying muscles pertaining to the Word of God.
6.     Look it up- If I’ve gotten to a point in the scriptures that I don’t understand, I’ll use my trusty phone to Google what I can’t understand or I’ll read other translations. I know that a lot of Christians laugh at The Message translation but it really helps me when I am stuck on a certain passage! J

Let me know if you’ve adopted any of these exercises before. If you plan on trying some of these, let me know how they work for you! If you have any great study tips that have worked for you, please feel free to share! Leave a comment below!

God bless you!

Christian Living: What I SHOULD do!

This past Sabbath, my pastor shared an incredible message on faith.
It was a message that I had been praying for. Truthfully, I almost didn't go to church but I read a quote a few days before that was pretty convicting:

"Don't let anything keep you out of church today that wouldn't keep you out of work on Monday."

I can appreciate the sentiment and so I went to church.

The sermon was EXACTLY what I needed to hear. I was sitting in the fellowship hall taking notes like crazy. The sermon was based in Mark 9: 17-24 where a man needed deliverance for his demon-possessed son. I just want to share two critical points for us to remember as we figure out life and faith.

1. Your face/reflection/countenance should never reflect your circumstances. Your face should reflect your God. How can this happen? Take EVERYTHING to God in prayer and make sure you are getting your DAILY bread. Make sure you talk to Christ daily and get in the Word daily.

2. Never underestimate a seed. The seeds (habits, practices) you plant today can morph into a giant powerful tree. Make sure you are planting the right seeds. Plant seeds of faith, discipline, positivity, beauty, love, diligence and endurance.

Tony Robbins is one of my favorite motivational speakers. When it comes to changing your life for the better, I've heard him share the difference between what we should do and what we must do.   He says that we always know what we should do. The problem is that we don't turn those "shoulds" into "musts" so we end up "SHOULDing" all over ourselves (haha, get it?) (his words not mine) . Make sure that reading the word of God, being in constant prayer, and planting the right seeds are habits that you MUST do and you will succeed!

God bless you!

Christian Living: Let go and Let God!

Oftentimes in our Christian walk of faith, we hear the cliche colloquialisms:

1. God is good...all the time...and all the time...God is good.
2. God's got it.
3. I'm blessed and highly favored.
4. Show up and show out!
5. Let go and Let God.

Because these statements are repeated so often, it can be easy to miss the fact that these are powerful truths. I woke up early one morning feeling completely stressed out about a whole bunch of things. There were so many concerns floating around in my head and I literally had to call out to God and tell Him to take them out of my head. As I drove to work, I told God I was letting go. I told God that I wasn't going to concern myself with the worries. I was going to do all I could do and leave the rest to Him. A couple minutes later, I received a text that was an immediate answer to one of my prayers. I couldn't believe it but at the same time, I could. I loved how God was trying to show me to lean on Him for everything and literally let go. As soon as I made the mental decision to stop stressing, God took over and did something powerful for me. God can order our steps if we let Him. The problem lies in the fact that a lot of times, we don't truly trust God to supply everything we need. We don't trust that He can do exceedingly, abundantly above all we could ever ask, think, or imagine in our lives. We read about it in the Bible. We hear about in sermons. We hear the testimonies of friends and family members. We might've even see it in our own lives in the past but to believe that God can show up and show out again in our favor...? That has some of us in a nervous place. We add nothing to our lives by stressing and worrying. What would life look like if you decided to truly let go of your worries and anxieties? I'd strongly encourage you to let go. God is waiting to be all you need and more.

Here's another cliche colloquialism for you:

Trust God.

God bless you.

Christian Living: Functioning in the Dysfunction

Recently, my cousin brought up a really thought-provoking concept that I haven't been able to shake since he said it. This happened a couple weeks ago but it was incredibly poignant for me. Allow me to explain.

Point of Consideration: People can know and be forewarned about impending disaster and choose not to do anything about because of what it could cost them. As a result,  they learn to work within the confines of the disaster when it arrives. He used the example of a cracked iPhone screen. If a screen protector and case are not applied to the phone, if the phone drops, the screen will more than likely shatter because it is made of glass.  Because Apple repairs can be very costly, based on how badly the screen is shattered, people will still try and use the screen. They will learn to work within the confines of a bad situation because it is temporarily convenient.

As I sat there and listened, I had a cracked screen on my iPhone. It's the second time I've cracked my screen within six months. This time is not nearly as bad as the first time. The first time I cracked the screen, I really did get it fixed as soon as possible because the phone was shattered. This time, the crack is barely noticeable to be honest. But, there was a lesson there for me...and I'm hoping someone can get something out of this too.

Lesson: A lot of times, we can get so comfortable in dysfunctional situations because of laziness. It takes work, time, effort, skill, money, etc. to change a problem. Too often, people are lazy and decide "no, i'm going to hold off that repair until later." When they check back later, the lack of urgency made problem even bigger and the work becomes even more consuming. If there's something you can do about your dysfunction now, do it. Create a plan to conquer whatever problems you have. The longer you sit on your issues, the longer you live in dysfunction. I don't care what anyone says. You do not have to live with dysfunction as your reality. Do it right the first time and take care of business. You'll be glad you did.

God bless you.

Christian Living: Nothing is Impossible

Luke 1:37 reminds us that nothing is impossible with God. In Luke 1, Elizabeth and Mary receive the news that they will be giving birth to amazing men. Elizabeth, who gave birth to John the Baptist, was old and barren. However, the Holy Spirit opened up her womb and blessed her with an incredible son. Mary, who have birth to Jesus Christ himself, was an engaged virgin when the Holy Spirit planted Jesus in her womb. Both situations were impossible by human standards but in this chapter, God reminds us that ALL things are possible.

It's interesting to note the encounter between the angel Gabriel and Zechariah. When Gabriel told Zechariah that Elizabeth was going to have a son in her old age, Zechariah questioned Gabriel. He asked him how he was supposed to believe such a thing. The angel Gabriel then told him that since he didn't believe, Zechariah would not be allowed to talk about the pregnancy until the son's birth.

Now if you've had a child before, you know the excitement that comes along with it. Your life becomes consumed with all things baby related. It's all you can talk about and share with friends, family, strangers, social media, etc. So you can imagine how difficult it must have been to mute during your wife's pregnancy. Well, that was the plight of Zechariah, the unbeliever.

On one hand, you really do want to give Zechariah a break. He had valid points as to why it would be hard to believe that he'd never have a son. However, when the angel Gabriel came and spoke it into his life, he should've believed right then and there. It makes me wonder how often have I questioned God and as a result received a punishment based on my unbelief. I can't dwell on that but I do believe that God takes it personally when we doubt Him. He has given His word which is FULL of His promises. He sent His ONLY son to die for our sins. He has shown His love to us countless times and yet still we can't even believe Him to provide the desires of our hearts. Shame on us.

Let this post serve as a heart check. Make it a practice to believe God at His word. The longer we meditate on His promises and focus on what He is doing in our lives, the less time we have to doubt Him. We mainly doubt because we don't know Him like we should. Cling to Jesus Christ in your moments of weakness, vulnerability and unbelief. He WILL show up and show out every time.

God bless you.

Christian Living: You are Stronger than You Think You are!!!

I had a REALLY tough time getting out of bed this morning. I woke up around 5 am and happily snuggled back under the covers, knowing that I had two hours left of sleepy time. I woke up around 6:30 am decided that I'd do devotion in bed. Something about the rain and the way my stomach was feeling kept me glued to the bed until the last minute. I rushed to get dressed and ready for work but it took a pretty substantial pep talk to get things moving. As I pushed and got ready for the day, I mentally made the decision that no matter what happened, I would make it through the day. Mind you, I LOVE my job. I LOVE the people I work with. I actually look forward to work every day. Why was I in such a weird place? Well, it was cold and rainy outside. My body was feeling a little weak and my stomach was a little crampy but that usually doesn't stop me, right?

As soon as I got to work, my stomach went into cramping hell. I gave my high-fives and good morning hugs to the kids and then made a beeline for the bathroom. I then took some medicine, ate some oatmeal (something to stick to the bones when you take medicine) and decided to keep the promise I made to myself only hours before. My boss informed me that we had quite a few errands to run: doctor's office, Wegman's and Toys R Us. Fun day, right?

As we drove to the doctor's office, my body felt like it was in the midst of a controlled fire. I could contain the pain but it was very very real. Within 20 minutes of arriving at the doctor's,  I had been in and out of the bathroom three times. I took two more Ibu Profin for a total of 800 mg in my system and then vomited it all up. Gross, uh? I began to pray because of the promise I made to myself and I really didn't want to go home and be stuck in bed all day. After praying and vomiting, I instantly felt A LOT better. I was so surprised and happy about it. My boss, at this point, was super cool and was kept checking on me to see if I needed anything. I assured her I was fine and then we headed to Wegman's. While in Wegman's, we stopped to purchase a hot cup of tea. I made it around the store just find and got to the check out line and the tea started to come back up. Thankfully, I made it to the restroom right in the knick of time to vomit the tea and remainder of my breakfast (sorry this is a gross post today). After that, I put on a Icy Hot medicated patch on my lower abdominals and went on with my business. By the time we arrived back at the house from Wegman's, I was perfectly fine and finished my day as if the dramatic morning hadn't happened. I ended up having a great finish to my day and got a ton of work done!

Moral of the story: Sometimes the immediate pain may feel unbearable but push through it! You can do it. Granted, you know your body and what you can handle. I knew that my pain would be temporary so I decided to keep pushing but sometimes it's good to push past what you think you can do because you'll surprise yourself. We are much stronger than we think we are. It's just that we've never had circumstances that really highlight that strength.  It's ironic that I gave myself the morning pep talk and promise not knowing what was in store for me. It was almost as if I was being set up for a test. I'm glad I stuck it out though. Demand a commitment from yourself and stick to it.
Your future self will thank you. Now excuse my while I pull a muscle patting myself on the back. I was a G today!

Christian Living: God Cares About the Little Things

Today was a pretty rainy day. Once I left work, I decided to take the long route home. Since I've been increasingly inspired by HGTV, I decided to stop by a furniture store that I always see from the road but never stop in.

After a quick walk-around, the store didn't inspire me as much I thought it would so I kept moving. As I continued to drive, I ended up seeing The Salvation Army store. I went into this particular location a couple years ago and was sorely underwhelmed. However, that was a couple years ago and things could've changed. I figured I'd stop in and see what was new. Man, was I in for a real treat!!

There were so many great pieces of furniture that were dying for an update and makeover. I had to restrain myself from purchasing this incredible mirror. I have absolutely no use for it now and can't stand hoarding so I decided to let it go. However, I did pick up three fantastically awesome fitting sweaters!! I really do need winter clothes. I'm not just saying that because girls like to shop. I actually am in need.  The blessing was that everything is half-off on Wednesdays so I bought three beautiful, flattering, great- quality sweaters for $9.02 total! What a deal! I really do love how God cares about the simple things. Only God knew that I was struggling to find winter clothes that were in my budget and fit really well. Only God knew that I was trying to wear out all my summer clothes until the last minute. Now, I have three new really pretty sweaters to wear AND I know where to go on Wednesdays in order to get some more!

Think about someone you love dearly. Don't you want to do everything in your power to make sure all their wants and needs are fulfilled? God is like that towards us but multiplied by infinity. The depth of His love isn't based in the mere material things. His love is an eternal kind of love. Our mere mortal minds can't truly comprehend it but know this: the thoughts God thinks towards us are really really good thoughts. He wants the best for us even in the things we think are simple or insignificant. He cares. He really does care.

I'm grateful for a God who cares about the simple things! Aren't you?

Christian Living: Sermon Notes

I am someone who loves to take notes when listening to a sermon, podcast, etc. I was going through some of my notes on my phone and I found this message that my pastor shared in June of 2012. This was such an encouraging and timely message then and it still is now. I figured I'd share the brilliance with my readers! Enjoy! I hope it is as much of a blessing to you as it's been to me. God bless you!

6 Steps to Becoming a Confident Christian- Pastor Brenda Billingy

1. Be certain that God loves you. Receive God's love. God will send people who love you. Focus on the ones who love you. Accept the people God brings into your circle. Love them and break the cycle of negativity.

2. A confident christian refuses to live in fear. Perfect love cast out fear. 1st John 4:18.

3. A confident christian thinks and speaks positively. Confidence and positivity is a choice. Let the poor say I am rich in Christ Jesus!

4. A confident christian recovers from setbacks. Look to the hills from whence cometh your help. Pray with expectancy Take off the "if only". Press toward the mark of the high calling!

5. A confident christian avoids comparisons. stop it. It will kill your confidence. Be the best you can be. God does not make mistakes. Accept your differences. Count YOUR (not your neighbor's) blessings. God will help you become a better you. Psalm 139.

6. Take action and give it to God. What you have may not seem like much, but God will do something amazing with it if you give it to him. It will not come when he takes you or breaks you (think of taking/breaking the bread at Communion). It will come when he blesses you. Deut. 28.

When you pray it won't be about you anymore. When you pray God's promises, you will have powere. Memorize scriptural promises.

Christian Living: Believe.

I was recently in conversation with a friend. We were talking about deeply rooted beliefs that we learned through church, school, home and popular culture. We also talked about popular quotes that we often mistook for scripture.

"By beholding, we become changed."

Granted I wasn't able to say where in the Bible that verse was but I whole heartedly believed it was there. Imagine my horror when my friend shared that it was a quote by Ellen G. White (one of the pioneering members of the Seventh-Day Adventist church).

How could this be?
I believed something was true so I couldn't fathom the possibility of it being false.
It got me to thinking. What else am I completely ignorant about?
It's not to say you'll get to a place where you'll learn everything about life. That won't happen. There are never-ending ways to learn new information. Understand that life is a not a place you get to. Life is more of a journey. Make it a sweet journey of "aha" moments and soliloquies of wonderment.
You'll never arrive.  Just be open to be present. Operate with an open heart and open mind to mysteries that God, in time, reveals that will mold you into a more perfect creature. Be ready to believe.

God bless you!

Christian Living: Share.

I decided not to share my blog on my social networks this week.
I didn't want to.
I decided that I'd much rather write and whoever stumbled upon it would find it.
Cool, if that's your thing.
It's not my thing.

I hope this will resonate with someone who may, like me, be afraid to self-promote their unique brand:

Put your best work into the world.
Share whatever God has placed on your heart to share.
Share boldly and selflessly.
Give with a heart that is full of excitement about what you have to offer.
There are people who need your message.

If you're a talented artist, a loving listener who also gives sound advice, a savvy administrator, a compassionate speaker; whatever God has given you to share, please do.
There is someone out there who needs your light so that they can be strengthened to shine their own light. Be the catalyst in your microcosm that decides to be great because their birth implies the charge to do so.

Share. Connect. Believe. Inspire. Grow.

It's in you to do so.

God bless you.

Christian Living: Don't Let Your Struggle Become Your Identity

Dysfunctional Family. Domestic Violence. Loneliness. Difficult friendships and/or romantic relationships. Financial distress. Undiscovered purpose. Lack of direction. Depression. Smoking. Pornography. Cutting. Laziness. What is your struggle? Many of us have at least one, if not more. Your struggles may have been picked up by associating with the wrong crowd. Your struggles may have been passed down through generations (that generational curse can do some serious damage). At the end of the day, you have them. They keep you up at night. They're the first words to pop into your mind's conversation bubble in the morning. When they go unchecked and unresolved, they plague you for years on end. They can rob you of your peace, happiness, joy and seeing the beauty that God and life have to offer. How do you get a grip? How do you bring an end to the constant state of struggle?

1. Identify it for what it is.
Call a spade a spade. Don't continue to live in the denial. If you are dealing with people who have hurt you deeply and have shown no intentions to change, call it out for what it is. If you find yourself gravitating toward a cigarette after a stressful day at work, call it out. You shouldn't need toxic fumes that can destroy your body in order to get over something life throws at you. Call that spade a spade. The sooner you are honest with yourself about what your struggle is, the sooner you can deal and heal!

2. Ask God for help, healing, resolve.
God knows the beginning to the end. He knows where your struggle started and why it's stayed with you for as long as it has. He knows the diamonds you can mine out of the coal. What the enemy intended for evil, God can use for His glory. Lay your weakness at His feet in prayer. Be in your Word and allow God to speak to you and give you strength through the Bible. A lot of times, we look at the Bible as just a book. The Bible has life-changing information if we would just simply open it up and read it. When you pray and seek God about a certain struggle you are facing, He will give you peace and clarity about how to deal with it.

3. If necessary, seek professional help.
God has equipped us with ability to get in contact with community. Community is very important when you are seeking help with a struggle. A mentor, physician, accountability partner, rehab specialist, minister, counselor, or a financial adviser are examples of people to reach out to depending on your struggle. There are people equipped to help you fight the battles life throws at you. It could be as simple as having someone to help you create a plan so that you lose the weight or a positive diversiona so that you don't pick up the phone when that ex calls. You need a plan to keep you focused and bring about change but you also need people to help be your support system.

Whatever it is that is plaguing your mind, heart and/or spirit, follow this steps and you will see a change. Don't let your struggle become your identity.

God bless you.
